Why Chasing SEO Scores Is the Wrong Game

There’s a quiet anxiety that creeps in when you install an SEO plugin. You write a considered, thoughtful piece. You hit publish. Then you glance at the score. 8 out of 100. Suddenly, something that felt strong now feels…lacking.

But here’s the uncomfortable truth: An SEO score is not a quality score. It’s a compliance score. It measures whether you’ve followed a checklist. It does not measure whether you’ve written something worth reading.

What Mechanical SEO Actually Does

Mechanical SEO works like this:

  • Pick a keyword.
  • Put it in the title.
  • Put it in the URL.
  • Repeat it in the first paragraph.
  • Use it a certain number of times.
  • Make sure it appears in subheadings.

If you tick the boxes, the score turns green. And to be clear — this approach isn’t useless.

If you’re targeting a specific, high-intent phrase like:

  • “Accountant for contractors in Bristol”
  • “Emergency plumber in Leeds”
  • “Divorce solicitor near me”

Then clarity and explicit keyword use absolutely matter. But here’s where things shift.

Search Has Moved On

Modern search engines do not simply count keywords.

They assess:

  • Topic depth
  • Relevance
  • Internal linking
  • Authority
  • Clarity
  • User engagement
  • Brand recognition

Increasingly, they assess entities and context, not repetition. And AI summaries — which are becoming more prominent — prioritise content that is clear, structured and authoritative, not mechanically optimised. In other words, writing naturally and writing strategically are no longer at odds.

The Real Risk of Writing Around Keywords

When you write around a keyword instead of around an idea, several things happen:

  • The prose stiffens.
  • Insight thins out.
  • The message becomes generic.
  • You sound like everyone else optimising for the same phrase.

Owner-operated service businesses don’t win by sounding generic. They win by being understood.

If your content genuinely demonstrates:

  • Clear positioning
  • Specific insight
  • Consistent expertise
  • A defined audience

You are building something far more durable than a plugin score. You are building authority.

So Is Mechanical SEO Dead?

No. It just belongs in the right place.

Use structured optimisation for:

  • Core service pages
  • Location pages
  • High-intent commercial searches

But for thought leadership, perspective pieces and trust-building content? Clarity beats compliance. Every time.

If your post scores 8/100 but speaks directly to the concerns of your audience, you haven’t failed. You’ve chosen the right game.
